We hope this newsletter finds you in good health and high spirits. As the festive season approaches, we would like to wish a healthy and prosperous life to you, your family, friends as well as to all our sponsors, donors, partner charities and well-wishers around the world.
May this Dashain and Tihar bring happiness, prosperity, and peace to your lives.
DASHAIN FESTIVAL
Dashain, also known as Vijaya Dashami, is one of the most significant and widely celebrated festivals in Nepal. It is a 15-day long festival that marks the victory of good over evil. During this time, people pay tribute to the goddess Durga and her various manifestations.
Celebrations: Dashain is a time for family gatherings, feasts, and cultural performances. People clean their homes, wear new clothes, exchange blessings and gifts. The highlight of the festival is the flying of kites and a traditional swing; which adds color and excitements.
TIHAR FESTIVAL
Tihar, also known as the Festival of Lights, follows Dashain and is celebrated for five days. It is a time to honor different animals and divinities.
Celebrations: Each day of Tihar has its own significance and rituals. The first day, known as Kaag Tihar, is dedicated to crows. The second day, Kukur Tihar, is dedicated to dogs, symbolizing loyalty and protection.
The third day, Gai Tihar, is dedicated to cows, which are seen as the incarnation of the goddess Laxmi. The fourth day, Govardhan Puja, is dedicated to oxen and mountains. The final day, Bhai Tika, is when sisters put tika on their brothers’ foreheads, symbolizing their love and protection.
Every year we celebrate this greatest festival with our beloved children (both supporting and reintegrated children). This year, most of them will be celebrating with their relatives and few at our care. Besides, we will be also sharing happiness to those children, who have been struggling to save enough money to celebrate this festival.
